Long walks

As with caches everywhere many on the Western Isles are within easy reach of your car but for those who love a good walk in beautiful countryside there are a few that will give your legs a good stretch whilst getting to see parts of the islands that regular tourists never see. Here a few of the recommended long walks.

the end of the road is nigh – longest walk on the islands at present being 8 or 9 miles there and back so allow about four hours. I haven’t actually done this one yet but I assume that it’s a decent walk across the moors

This Must Be Nowhere! – about three and a half miles there and back along a fairly easy path with fantastic coastal views. Will probably be a bit boggy towards the end. Allow a couple of hours.

A Remote Temple - a three mile round walk in an area where hardly anybody ever ventures especially recommended if you return via the coastal route. Allow a couple of hours.

Cravadale – in North Harris is a 3 mile round trip in some fairly tough terrain especially when it’s wet. Not one to be underestimated and not one to undertake without proper clothing and footwear.

The Clisham Diamond Jubilee Cache – the most obvious outdoor enthusiast’s cache, straight up the highest mountain in the Western Isles! It’s a little over three miles straight up and back but half of that is uphill so allow three hours or more. If you are not sure where to start check out Walk Highlands here. Of course you could make a day of it and do the Clisham Horseshoe!

One Doune – so far a neglected cache that involves a lovely walk to another area where hardly anybody ventures. You’ll get to see the island of Little Bernera from a unique vantage point. Not really a long walk, being just over mile there and back, but highly recommended.

There are, of course plenty of other ‘long walks‘ and, hopefully others will recommend their favourites. I haven’t included any in the Uists or Barra because I haven’t been there yet!
